Some visitors have a late flight into Denver or an early morning return back home and prefer a hotel much nearer the airport and ......
The properties closest to the airport are on Tower Road and include: Comfort Suites, Courtyard by Marriott, Day's Inn, Fairfield Inn, Hampton Inn, La Quinta, and Ramada. You can drop your car and use the hotel's courtesy shuttle.

The next closest are about 20 minutes away and are clustered around East 32nd to East 40th street with street addresses of 15000-17000. They will be less expensive. Also less expensive -- and about 30 minutes away -- will be hotels near the old Stapleton Airport location. You should keep your car for any hotels you find in these areas.

RENTAL CARS AT DENVER AIRPORT.
Most major car rental companies are represented at Denver Airport. If traveling in the Winter, be sure to request ski rack. Despite good public transportation, most visitors rent a car for greater mobility and freedom. Travel from the airport to the Zephyr Mountain Lodge is 95 miles and will take about 2 hours IN GOOD WEATHER.

When returning your car, be certain to allow plenty of time to make your plane. Bad weather can add an additional hour driving. Saturday or Sunday evenings -- summer and winter -- there is heavy traffic on I-70. Allow an additional hour. Denver morning rush hour traffic will also add 20 minutes. It's simple to arrange and pickup a rental car at Denver Airport [DEN]. The counters are all on level 5, just as you exit the escalators after riding the underground train to the main terminal. Grab your rental car before you get your luggage.

Tip -- refill your gas tank ahead of time since rental car companies often charge up to three times the normal rate. There is a station adjacent to the rental car return lots that charges $.15 to $.20 per gallon above Denver rates. As you approach the airport, the station is on the left side between mile markers 8 and 9. Exit at Jackson Gap Rd and double back. Or you can refill for market rates at any of the stations at the Chambers Road or Peoria Road exits off Interstate 70. Be sure to top off the tank because these exits are 10-12 miles from the airport.

Take care when driving through the town of Empire -- just after exiting I-70 at mile 232 -- as the local officials strictly enforce their speed limits.

WINTER DRIVING TIPS:
Winter driving in the Colorado Rockies can be tricky. The Colorado Department of Transportation uses the newest equipment and methods to clear snow, and the mountain passes are kept open 365 days a year. Berthoud Pass has recently undergone a major widening and straightening project to improve safety and driving ease. Still we advise caution. DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
To help with your drive, we are pleased to offer simple driving instructions. You need to take fewer than 10 turns, and you will encounter just 3 traffic lights -- usually green.

1. Take Pena Blvd from Denver Airport to I-70 West. This is approx 8-10 miles depending on where you rent your car.

2. Take I-70 West towards Idaho Springs/Grand Jct., to Exit 232. It's about 51 miles.

3. Take Exit 232 (U.S. Hwy 40 West) towards Empire/Granby and over Berthoud Pass. Beware the town of Empire about 1 mile from the exit. The local officials frequently patrol for speeders.

4. Winter Park Resort is approximately 25 miles on Hwy 40 from the I-70.

5. Turn left at the first traffic light you encounter since the town of Empire over 30 minutes ago. (you will see the colorful Winter Park Resort sign), and then follow the Winter Park Drive down and then in a bend to the right for one half a mile to Winter Park Resort.

6. After about a third of a mile you will come to a access gate which -- unless staffed -- will be open. Proceed past the gate and take the first left turn into the Zephyr Mountain Lodge driveway. The Zephyr Mountain Lodge is the new condominium complex right next to the ski area.

7. The front desk reception is situated in the first building -- Riverside -- of the Zephyr Mountain Lodge.
