KAUAI INFORMATION FOR CONDO RENTERS

Kauai Sounds Wonderful.  Should you stay in Princeville, Poipu, or the East Shore

Fortunately, you can visit all of Kauai from any of the three common lodging locations: Princeville, Poipu, or the East [Coconut or Royal] Shore.  Your decision rests more on the type of locale that pleases you most for use as your home base.  Read below to find your pleasure.  And check out the pictures.  Each says a 1000 words.

NORTH SHORE -- PRINCEVILLE & CLIFFS RESORT

The North Shore is signature Kauai with the lush tropical atmosphere, fine sandy beaches, breathtaking waterfalls, and marvelous golf Kauai routinely promotes.  The compromise is is more frequent rainfall.

The Princeville and Cliffs Resort areas are professionally landscaped, recently renovated, and carefully maintained to highest standards.  The town of Hanalei is uniquely classic with a tourist oriented rural Hawaiian charm  and has not outgrown it's early 1970's free spirit-ness.  Everywhere the vista's are green.

The North Shore is the recommended base of operations for exploring the Kauai's Na Pali coast, best sand beaches, waterfalls from Lihue to Na Pali, and for playing the Princeville world famous golf courses.

Prices range from moderate to expensive -- by Kauai standards or economy to moderate by Maui standards.

POIPU

The Poipu coast is a modern condo and chain hotel resort area.  It is adjacent to the relatively dryer regions of Kauai and therefore gives closer access to the sunny areas of the island.  The landscape is pleasant with a mixture of green and gold tones -- dry climate plants replace the lush tropical foliage of Kauai's wetter areas.

Poipu itself is professionally landscaped and carefully maintained to highest standards.  Surrounding towns are rural Hawaii with agricultural economies.

The south shore is the recommended base of operations for Kauai's best swimming, sunning, snorkeling, and shopping.  The south shore is also the recommended base for those wishing to spend several days exploring the extensive hiking network of Waimea Canyon.

Prices range from moderate to expensive -- by Kauai standards or economy to moderate by Maui standards.

EAST COAST

The East Coast may seem like the ideal compromise location to use as a base from which to explore Kauai.  And that would be our recommendation for anyone with just 2 or 3 days to spend on Kauai.

The east coast of Kauai contains most of the native island population and commerce centers.  Therefore, east coast lodging tends to sit alongside busy highways and commercial centers.  East Coast beaches are shared with the local surfing children.  The east coast tends to lack the ocean and tropical charms of Princeville and Poipu.

Prices range from economy to moderate.

MORE INFO

If you decide for a North Shore based vacation, the travel time to things like Waimea Canyon and Barking Sands Beach will be 45 to 60 minutes additional drive than when one stays at Poipu.  The opposite also applies -- those staying in Poipu will have 45 to 60 minutes additional drive time than when one stays at Poipu.

In the next page we've tried to compare and contrast some of the more common activities between the 3 island locations.  Select the next button or follow more specific links for shopping, golf, helicopter tours, tour boats, dining, waterfalls, kayaking, hiking, scuba & snorkeling, or beaches.

MORE THAN ONE LOCALE??  Many people consider splitting a trip to Kauai into both north and south.  We don't advise this practice.  You will consume the better part of a day in the pack-checkout-depart-travel-checkin-unpack cycle.   And you will fail to achieve the relaxing magic of Kauai that you've planned your trip for.    Kauai is small enough that you can see the entire island from a single lodging choice.
