Lumaha'i Beach
-- South Pacific Beach --

South Pacific Beach
South Pacific Beach is one of the most photographed beaches in all Hawaii.   Lumaha'i Beach stared in the film South Pacific.  The beach looks every bit as original as when the movie was filmed a half century ago.

The beach is a well over a half  mile long, slightly crescent shaped,  and absolutely gorgeous.  The east end of the beach has dramatic rocks with huge crashing waves.  Beware standing on these rocks, even momentarily for a picture.  Several people have lost their lives.  Behind the beach is a lava cliff adorned with lush tropical jungle.  At the west end of the beach is a lovely lagoon where the Lumaha'i River empties to the Pacific Ocean.  This end is served by convenient parking and in recent years, the west end has become a very popular spot.

There are no facilities nor commercial nor residential buildings.  The setting is rustic and authentic.  The only drawback is an occasional 4WD truck on the beach.

There is no reef protection and the waves come crashing in with great intensity.  Consequently swimming is usually dangerous. We've never seen more than 20 people on this beach.

Directions -- 15 min 4 miles --
-- Head west [right] on Highway 56 from Princeville toward Hanalei.  Highway 56 changes to Highway 560 at the Princeville Shopping Center [mile marker 28].  Continue to the 4 mile marker on Highway 560.  0.8 miles past the 4 mile marker are a couple of parking areas on the right side.  Just past the second parking area a trail leads down to the east end of the beach along a quarter mile path.  There are other well worn routes as well.
--- The west end of the beach is accessible at about mile 5.6 of Highway 560.   There is a nice parking lot with good shade.  The beach is readily accessible.
