KAUAI INFORMATION FOR CONDO RENTERS

If the traditional long -- 8 to 10 foot -- board doesn't sound interesting, consider body surfing, boogie boarding, or windsurfing.  Some are easier [boogie boarding] and some much tougher [wind surfing] than regular surf board riding.

Surfing lessons are a good idea for learning the basics.  Surf board rentals are available island-wide.  Don't be afraid to ask for help in choosing the right board for your size and level of experience.  While you are there, ask about surf conditions around the island as conditions vary considerably according to time of year and beach location.

Kalihiwai: also on the North Shore gets expert surf in the winter.  The beach is a nice, curving pocket of sand situated at the head of Kalihiwai Bay. Many consider these to be some of the best waves on Kauai

Pakala-On the west shore, this beach has an incredible surf break referred to as Infinities. The surf break is named so because the rides seem to last forever. This beach is not safe for swimmers and should be used by expert surfers only

Shipwreck Beach (Keoneloa Beach) On the south shore, Shipwreck is the best surfing, wind surfing, boogie boarding and body surfing beach. Swim only during calm ocean conditions.

Although many additional spots have been identified on Kauai in recent years, there is not the abundance of good breaks as found on Oahu. Some of Kauai's best spots do offer outstanding waves, however, and the mood is generally more mellow and low key than on the more populated islands. Visiting surfers may still be looked upon with some suspicion, and a friendly, unaggressive manner works best. Similar to Oahu, the breaks on Kauai's windward (east) side often break on distant, offshore reefs and are blown out except during early-morning, pre-tradewind hours or Kona-wind conditions. The winter breaks of the west side are especially treacherous with large, hard-breaking waves and radical currents. The summer breaks of the south shore are similar to the Ala Moana Park area of Oahu and enjoy prevailing offshore winds. The north coast is temperamental with frequent rain and wrong winds; it needs winter-time conditions that are just right to reach its excellent potential. In the winter the north shore will average 6-8', with waves of 20'+ possible at any time.
