THE ADVANCED MICROLABS STORY

Advanced MicroLabs, LLC (AML) was founded in 2003 by five principals in an effort to realize the commercial potential of new technology being developed at Colorado State University. One of the founders, Dr. Charles Henry, was (and still is) a professor in the Department of Chemistry at Colorado State University. As part of on-going research into lab-on-a-chip devices, he had discovered an innovative detection technology for microchip electro chromatography. A patent on this device has been filed and is being reviewed by the US Patent and Trademark Office. In the meantime, AML obtained an exclusive license to this technology from Colorado State University.

Once the technology had been licensed from CSU, AML scientists immediately sought out funding for initial research in the form of SBIR grants. The company was immediately successful in obtaining early stage NSF grant funding for a project targeted at measuring glycated Hemoglobin. Glycated Hemoglobin is an important marker of glucose regulation in diabetics.  While progress was being made on the measurement science and the equipment development for Hemoglobin, additional funding was obtained for development of measurements of Creatinine and Homocysteine.  The combined funding enabled substantial refinement of the microchip and measurement instrument.  However insufficient measurement results were obtained to interest industrial partners to invest in continued development.

In 2008, Advanced MicroLabs was introduced to the Perchlorate ground water contamination problems across the US.  Perchlorate is a by-product of munitions manufacture and rocket propellant combustion.  Perchlorate has been linked to  thyroid health problems.  AML has received funding grants NIH to develop a test for Perchlorate in ground water sensitive to better than a part per billion.  Matching funds from industrial partners would be sufficient to finalize and launch a solution for monitoring this health hazard.

In 2009, Advanced MicroLabs retained the services of two experts in water quality in industrial applications.   They quantified customer needs in the power generation, pharmaceutical, and semiconductor sectors.  Development of solutions for the power generation sector was started late in 2009.

Early in 2010, Advanced MicroLabs filed for additional IP thereby protecting the foundation of our on-line measurement capability.
