Local Dining

This information is compiled to assist guests who rent our Condo at the Zephyr Mountain Lodge.  If you've arrived at this page as a result of a web search on Winter Park Dining, we hope you benefit from the information.  And if you need lodging, thank you for considering us.

OVERVIEW:

Once in Winter Park, look for a copy of the Grand County Menu Guide. Copies of this full color 8 1/2 by 11 guide are available at the concierge desk and at the literature racks in the Zephyr Mountain Lodge.  Use this guide to fine tune your dining agenda.  Many restaurants have menus and even prices.

Or before you leave for Winter Park, you can do some research from the comfort of your own computer.  To make matters as simple and friendly as possible for you, we've made a table of Winter Park Region dining establishments along with pictures.  Just click on the picture for a larger view and to see our notes.  [We've eaten in about 70% of the Restaurants listed].  Should you want another opinion, we have included the 2 most comprehensive websites describing Winter Park dining opportunities.   

Reading our tables:  The restaurants are grouped by location.  Green highlighted restaurants are the webmaster's favorites....
-- At or near the ski area [you can walk from the Zephyr Mountain Lodge]

-- In the town of Winter Park [about 3.5 miles].  Drive or shuttle bus.

-- Fraser/Tabernash Restaurants [from 6 to 10 miles].  Driving recommended.

CLOSE TO SKI RESORT
You do NOT need a car to get to these establishments from the Zephyr Mountain Lodge.   The Doc's Road House is right in the Zephyr Building.  It is our favorite. 

The Club Car, Derailer Bar, Lodge at Sunspot, West Portal Deli, Docs Road House, and West Portal Food Court are run by the ski corporation.  The Lodge at Sunspot is only open selected nights and includes a gondola ride to the top of the mountain.  It should not be missed. 

The best bet for Continental Breakfast is the Balcony House Coffee and Tea Mart [in the 1950 vintage wooden base lodge].  The best bet for full breakfast is the Food Court at West Portal [black metal building]. 

Chef Al Sapien -- Grand County's favorite -- has partnered with the restaurant at Iron Horse formally known as Jane Creek Grill.  The new Tabernash Tavern boasts an international menu prepared in Sapien's unique style.

WINTER PARK TOWN RESTAURANTS
The town of Winter Park [about 3.5 miles by car from the ski area base] has the greatest concentration of restaurants.  Travel from the ski area by personal car, shuttle bus, or taxi [Home James].

Our personal favorites include Deno's, Gasthaus, Hernando's, Randi's, Rudi's, the Shed, and Smokin' Moe's.  It all depends on the cuisine we're craving after a day of exercise.

FRASER RESTAURANTS
The possible eating establishments extend from town of Winter Park into Fraser -- and then to special special experiences nestled in the woods a few miles from Fraser.  A car is recommended to get to these places which are from 6 to 12 miles from the ski area base.

Visitors looking for  a dining adventure should consider "Dinner at the Barn" which includes sleigh [or hay] ride, western dinner, and live entertainment.  Or for one of the most romantic meals and settings don't miss the "Ranch House at Devil's Thumb".  [The other two equally romantic dinner spots are "The Lodge at Sunspot" and "The Rapids".]

GRAND LAKE RESTAURANTS
There are  over 50 restaurants between the Ski Resort and Grand Lake.  So we would recommend choosing a Grand Lake establishment only if you were interested in one of these two special spots. 

Of course if you are planning on spending a day in Grand Lake sampling some of the activities--  such as fishing, boating, horseback riding, or snowmobiling -- then any Grand Lake restaurant may be your top choice.  Grab a local Grand Lake dining guide.

DENVER to ZEPHYR RESTAURANTS
You have endless eating opportunities in Denver.  Click here for an on-line Denver restaurant guide.   Once off I-70 and on US 40, there are a number of quaint dining establishments.  The Peck House has almost a century and a half of history in a region barely more than a century old.  The food is great. Beau Jo's makes unique mountain pizza -- a must visit for hungry travelers.  And the Empire Dairy King has some of the best burgers and shakes at reasonable prices.  Don't miss the chance to stop.  Or visit the ORIGINAL Hard Rock Cafe.  Not the one that started the chain, but the "joint" that was in existence dozens of years before the chain was conceived.
