WATERSKIING

Hawaii's only waterskiing is on the Wailua River. Ski boats
launch from the boat ramp in Wailua River State Park, directly across from the
marina. Lessons, equipment rental, and guided tours all available.

WINDSURFING
Anini Beach is the best place for beginners to learn to
Windsurf. Lessons and equipment are available. Serious windsurfers
should head to Hanalei Bay or Tunnels Beach, both on the North Shore.

HISTORICAL SITES
There are numerous historical treasures from the
early settling of Hawaii by white men that are open to the public in good
restored condition. All total the
National Historical Register lists 38 places on Kauai. There are also
many stone structure dating to well before recorded times.
An excellent website with fine descriptions of the various historical landmarks
on Kauai. The few selections below are simply some of the more
impressive sites.
Hariguchi Rice Mill.
Head for the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge along the Ohiki
Road at the west end of the Hanalei River bridge. The old mill is on a
dirt road on a levee.Kilauea Lighthouse
Kilauea Lighthouse is the northernmost point of the main Hawaiian
Islands. Built in 1913, it was had the largest lens of it's kind and guided
ships heading to and from the Orient. ... Located two miles north of Kilauea
town on the North Shore
Menehune Ditch
Built by the ancient natives for raising fish. This projects is truly an
engineering marvel. Located south east of Lihue.
Kilohana Plantation Estate 808-245-5608
The site of the old Wilcox sugar plantation, this beautifully
restored plantation is luxuriously furnished and depicts plantation life in the
pre-World War II era. The plantation lies on 35 exquisite acres and features
agricultural exhibits, local arts and crafts, specialty shops, and a garden
courtyard restaurant. Twenty minute horse carriage tours pulled by Clydesdale
horses are available daily. Located in Lihue.
Grove Farm Homestead 808-245-3202
One of the oldest (circa 1864) plantations on Kauai,
this historic 80 acre homestead was originally a sugar plantation and is now a
living museum filled with turn-of-the-century memorabilia belonging to the
famous missionary family who built it. The original family's mansion, worker's
quarters, and extensive tropical gardens are on site. Located in Lihue.
Waioli Mission House 808-245-3202
One of the first (circa 1837) missionary houses on the
island, this two story frame house was built of coral limestone blocks and is
listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house is filled with
period furnishings and the grounds contain traditional Hawaiian horticulture.
Located behind he Waioli Huia Church in Hanalei.
Wailio Huia Church
Perhaps the most photographed building in Hanalei. Catch it on the right
day and you have a magnificent backdrop of Kauai's interior mountains.
Hanalei Elementary School Building
This historic structure now serves as a commercial plaza.
Hanalei Pier
Over 100 years old, the pier is stiff functional today.

National Tropical Botanical Gardens
Located on highway 560 a mile before Kee Beach in Kauai's very northwest
corner. This area is one of the wetter areas easily reached by
car. Visitors report this is an excellent vacation stop.
Kauai's largest gardens. Features 1000 acres of gardens in the
Limahuli Valley. Open 4 or 5 days a week. Call for times and

Wailua River Valley. During the day, see the flower wheel, the

MUSEUM

Housed in two buildings, including the Albert Spencer
Wilcox building which was built in 1922, this living history and art
museum is dedicated to the preservation of the culture of Kauai and
features galleries containing ancient Hawaiian artifacts, art work by
local artists, changing exhibits, hands-on activities, and educational
exhibits. An extensive gift shop is also on site.
With quiet hospitality, the museum tells the story of Kauai.
Koke'e Natural History Museum

Located at Kokee State Park in Kekaha
The only museum in Hawaii that is open every day of the
year, this museum features an array of interpretive programs and
exhibitions showcasing Kauai's ecology, geology, and climatology plus
provides basic information on trail conditions in Waimea Canyon and Koke'e
State Parks. A gift shop is on site that carries maps, hiking guides, and
books on Hawaiian history.

MOVIE THEATERS
There is a theater [historic] in Kilauea just 4 miles
from Princeville and cinema in Kapaa and a multi-screen
theater in Lihue about 35 miles distant.Kilauea Theater
The North Shore's only theater closed in July 2005 and is
now home to a local church.
