HISTORY:  This strip of wilderness was once home to a thriving population of early Polynesians.  Settled some time around 1200 AD, as many as 6000 Hawaiians lived in these valleys.  By 1300 AD, the lush hillsides were filled with taro, sweet potato, breadfruit, and other plants important for daily life.
